Bad Breath, also known as halitosis, is a complaint that is frequently encountered in daily life. Concern about bad breath is the third most common reason people seek dental care, after tooth decay and gum disease. Therefore, we might call it a social taboo. Although this unpleasant breath comes from inside the mouth, there might be several causes that are associated with the stomach, lungs, liver, sinuses, etc. From a psychosocial point of view, this condition causes anxiety in people. In the following times, it leads to the formation of social pressure, psychosocial stress, and self-esteem problems in a person.

Although the smell of bad breath can be observed in any age group, it is more common in middle-aged people, especially in the early morning. Also, studies show that men have 3 times more bad breath than women. In addition, it is observed 3 times more in individuals over the age of 20 than in young people.

Teeth and dental health is the first step in the fight against bad breath. Check for existing dentures and bridges in the mouth. Old bridges and dental prostheses in the mouth can cause bad odors, as they will lead to food accumulation over time. In these cases, you should replace the ones that need to be replaced, and get the necessary treatments for the missing teeth.

Tongue bacteria produce malodourous compounds and fatty acids and about 80 to 90% of all cases of mouth-related bad breath. Although a tongue cleaner may temporarily benefit, the exact solution to bad breath can not be expected.

Mouthwash (mouth rinse, oral rinse, or mouth bath) may be useful due to its antiseptic ingredient which is intended to reduce the microbial load in the mouth.

The use of floss is recommended to prevent gingivitis and the build-up of plaque. In addition, The American Dental Association has reported that flossing in combination with tooth brushing can help prevent gum disease and halitosis.

Treating gingival inflammation is the key to solutions. As long as you solve the problem that causes another problem, there won’t be any problems left…

Chew gum. Saliva is the most powerful way to combat bad breath. If you are wondering why your mouth smells bad in the morning, the answer is here; during the night, saliva secretion decreases, and food particles in your mouth stay here for a long time. Bacteria also use them with pleasure and rot. So your mouth can smell bad in the morning. Chewing sugar-free gum helps to clean your mouth by increasing your saliva secretion. Chewing gums containing xylitol can also help you with this.

Use cinnamon in your drinks and foods. Cinnamon is an important weapon in the fight against intraoral bacteria.

Reduce smoking. Smoking also causes halitosis because of its dry mouth effect. Furthermore, it set the stage for periodontal disease which is another reason for bad breath.

If these solutions are insufficient, do not forget to see your dentist…
